Inspiration –
I’m seeing bucket hats everywhere, and why not? They are cute, packable, keep the sun out of your eyes, make a great accessory, and make your hair look great when you don’t have time to wash it. This bucket hat has become a go to when packing for a trip. So, bucket hat designs are often percolating in my mind. When I discovered the Berroco Remix Yarn, thanks to my local yarn shop, I knew it would make a great hat. It somehow has both stretch and structure. I’ll rave more about this yarn later.
In addition to the yarn, my inspiration for this hat design is the grit stitch. The grit stitch is a simple repeating pattern of working 2 single crochets in a stitch, skipping the next stitch, and working 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Great for beginners who feel comfortable with single crochet! I love the modern texture it creates using just single crochet. It’s fun to work, looks great, and makes the hat interesting.
Design –
The top of the hat is worked by joining increasing rounds of single crochet, the band is worked by joining rounds in the grit stitch pattern, then the brim is again worked in joining increasing rounds of single crochet. A final row of slip stitches gives just a bit of extra structure to the brim.
I used the magic loop to start the hat. I just love how tight you can pull the first round together. It still often takes me a few tries to get a magic loop started, so don’t give up if you’re new to it. I think you’ll love the result.
Pay close attention in the pattern and see the photos of when to work the beginning stitch of a round (after the chain 1) in the SAME stitch or in the NEXT stitch. I have found this has an impact on the visual of joining rounds with a slip stitch, so point it out in the pattern.

This project is made with two strands of Berroco Remix Yarn held together throughout. Therefore it works up quickly.
And it’s easy to take this project on the go. I made one on a road trip, spending about 3 hours total.
Speaking of on the go, the Remix Bucket Hat has already become a go to for trips. It’s lightweight and packable. Keeps the sun out of your eyes but adds no heat to your head. Keeps its shape after being rolled up in a suitcase or shoved into a day pack. Perfect for days when you might be putting it on and taking it off several times. So fun to make and wear!
Yarn –
This yarn! I love everything about it. I’ve already pointed out that it has both stretch and structure, so great for a hat. It also is 100% recycled and has a tweed effect. I love a good tweed. I love a good recycle.
This color! Green is my favorite color and it’s not easy to find the perfect tone—this is it. Fern. It’s like the ultimate mix of bright and neutral. You’ll quickly see though that this yarn comes in an array of gorgeous hues, it will be hard to choose.
If you can splurge on the Berroco Remix Yarn, you won’t regret it. If not, a great alternative is Lion Brand Re-Tweed (also recycled). The gauge matches, so size should be the same. I also made this hat using a cotton yarn (typically used for dish cloths). The size was a bit smaller and perfect for a child.

Hat measures approx 22 inches around at bottom of band; top of hat approx 6.75 inches across, band of hat approx 3.25 inches tall, brim 2.75 inches
SPECIAL NOTE ON SIZE: Per the Craft Yarn Council standards, the average head circumference for a woman is 21-23 inches, and the average head circumference for a man is 22–24 inches. If possible measure the circumference of the head for the hat. If 22 inches seems to be too large, use a smaller hook size. Similarly, if it seems too small, use a larger hook size.

NOTES
The entire hat is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together; and is worked in the round, joining rounds with a slip stitch. Beginning round of the band and the brim are worked in back loops only to provide definition. A final row of slip stitches around the brim gives just a bit of extra structure.
