Crochet Pink Twist Bucket Hat

Crochet this cute, quick bucket hat named the pink twist for the beautiful color and for the effect created by working a row of treble crochets in back loops only on the band. Don’t let that fool you, it’s all simple stitches. This project is made with two strands of Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn. Working with this soft, silky, lightweight tape yarn is pure joy. Packable, breathable, so fun to make and wear.

Inspiration

Sure to become one of your favorites, this cute bucket hat features a row of treble crochets on the band. The treble crochets are worked in back loops only which gives this hat some interest and some attitude. I saw this technique used on a basket several years ago and I always remembered how much I liked this feature. When I began to think about the design for a bucket hat, this came to mind and to my delight looks great in real life (this is not always the case with the ideas in my head). Enjoy this free pattern.

The pink twist bucket hat has already been on several trips (hiking in Sedona, anyone?) because it is so lightweight and packable. Keeps the sun out of your eyes but adds no heat to your head. Keeps its shape after being rolled up in a suitcase or shoved into a day pack. The hat fits slightly loose which I like for days when I’m putting it on and taking it off several times, no hat hair!

Design

Don’t let those trebles in back loops fool you, it’s all simple stitches. The top of the hat is worked in rounds of single crochet, the band is worked by joining rounds with a slip stitch and features the treble crochets, then the brim is again worked in rounds of single crochet. Place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of each round for those worked in the round. This makes life so much easier! A final row of slip stitches gives just a bit of extra structure. I did work my stitches slightly tightly throughout the project. I used the magic loop to start the hat. I just love how tight you can pull the first round together. It still often takes me a few tries to get a magic loop started, so don’t give up if you’re new to it. I think you’ll love the result.

Yarn

This project is made with two strands of Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn held together. Working with this soft, silky, lightweight tape yarn is pure joy. Using a larger hook creates a natural “airiness” perfect for this hat which takes you from spring right on through summer and into fall. It is a bulky weight yarn, that conforms to the hook. So many possibilities for this beautiful yarn. The yarn rips if pulled strongly, so be gentle, especially if you need to frog it (pull out some of your work)—this is a given for me!

Size

According to the Craft Yarn Council standards, the average head circumference for a woman is 21-23 inches, and the average head circumference for a man is 22–24 inches. If possible measure the circumference of the head for the hat. If 23 inches seems to be too large, use a smaller hook size. Similarly, if it seems too small, use a larger hook size. The model’s head measures 22 1/2 inches and the hat fits slightly loose.

Hook

This was my first time using the M hook (but have reached for it several times since). I ordered an ergonomic set from Amazon which came with some additional perks—small stitch markers, red yarn needles and a cute storage bag. The ergonomic handle is for real, it felt great in my hand and I worked quickly and easily. I didn’t think I would use the red yarn needles (only because I already have other yarn needles), but find myself reaching for them frequently as they usually contrast with the yarn making it a bit easier to weave in ends. The large size of the M hook created an airiness to the work. Smaller hooks will create a tighter stitch and this will look just as lovely in this pattern.

Flatten it.
Fold it and pack it.
Pop it back into shape.
