Crochet Sun & Splash Rug

Crochet this easy rug to add a ray of sunshine and a splash to your outdoor space. Made with just single crochet and chain stitches, the moss stitch makes it thick and gives a modern vibe. Made with 100% recycled jumbo yarn, it works up quickly. Please enjoy this free pattern.

Inspiration –
The yarn was the inspiration for this rug. I noticed it at the store and was drawn not only to the happy color and chunky size but the fact that it is entirely recycled content. I had a hunch it would be perfect for a rug, and am delighted to report it really is!

I have two sets of patio doors, in my kitchen and family room, that lead to my backyard deck. The rugs I had outside at each door were in really tough shape, so I had it in mind to make new ones for the coming spring and summer season. It’s been a cold spring in Minnesota this year, so making this project was just the thing to cheer me up knowing summer will eventually arrive.

These rugs bring a breath of fresh air to my outdoor space. I spend a lot of time in my backyard and am intentional about having the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire. I named the rug sun and splash because the main color is like bright sunshine (fire) and the contrasting color lines add a little wave of blue (water) to break it up a bit. I have lots of earth tones in my space, so like to add a pop of bright color with my accessories. These rugs fit the bill in every way.

Design –
The best thing about making your own rug is customizing the size to fit your space. The 36 by 22-inch rug makes a nice size for placement by most doors. I tried it out at my front door as well as my patio doors on the deck and it worked great in both locations.

Cheer up the front door with a colorful rug.

I chose to work the rug in moss stitch because it’s got a modern vibe and it adds density and interest to your project. The pattern looks identical on both sides and it lays nice and flat—perfect for a rug.

The moss stitch pattern is created by alternating chain stitches and single crochet where the single crochets are worked in the chain-1 space. Repeat the pattern in the next row which then alternates the chain spaces and single crochets in the row below.

Also, this stitch is great for beginners that are proficient in single crochet.

Pointers –
While it really doesn’t matter which side of the rug is the right side and which is the wrong side since both are identical, I decided row 1 (and therefore all uneven rows) is the right side. Then I pushed any knots to the wrong side as I worked, and also used a yarn needle to weave in loose ends on the wrong side.

I had enough yarn left over that 2 rows of Color A could be added, and 1 row of Color B. Adding 3 rows to the rug will make it closer to 3 feet by 2 feet. (In the center section of the rug, you could work 20 rows of Color A instead of 18, and add 1 row of Color B in the center of the rug.)

When joining a new skein, I overlapped 3 or 4 inches of both yarn ends for a few stitches. This bulky yarn absorbed this method very well.

Selling points –
Recycled. Works up quickly. Easy. Great project for beginners. Brings a ray of sunshine and a splash. Best of all, when the compliments roll in, you get to say you whipped it up yourself!

Yarn –
Just gonna repeat myself here—the Loops & Threads Eco Tie Dye Yarn is 100% recycled. That along with the jumbo size that works up super fast are the best features of this yarn. The bright color choices will cheer up any project. The texture is perfect for a rug or basket.

The N hook is the recommended hook size for this yarn. I used the L hook to get a tighter, firmer rug. The Eco Tie Dye yarn is a thick fuzzy strand with a thin thread wrapped around it to give it texture. Perhaps because of the smaller hook size, the thread occasionally would catch on the hook. Paying close attention to your work and good light was helpful.
